+ According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, a 25-year-old software engineer named Marko Elez working for Elon Musk’s DOGE operation that is rummaging through the Treasury Department’s payment systems resigned on Thursday after the Trump White House was told of his connections to a now-deleted social media account that called for repealing the Civil Rights Act and said “I want a eugenic immigration policy, is that too much to ask.”

One post on the account, disparaging the number of people from India working at tech jobs in Silicon Valley, said: “Normalize Indian hate.” Another post from September declared, “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity.” In July, he wrote: “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.”

According to the WSJ, Elez worked for Musk Starlink, SpaceX and X, where, according to his personal website, he “focused on artificial intelligence.” No one could possibly be surprised by this turn of events.

+ How did the guy (now Veep) who spread racist lies about Haitian immigrants in his own state killing and eating cats and dogs respond to news that a Musk staffer, one of two people given permission to rummage through the Treasury Dept’s financial transactions database, called for a “eugenics based immigration policy?”….He was just a kid (he is 25), bring him back!

+ I wonder if Vance’s wife, Usha Bala Chilukuri, whose parents moved to the US from India in the 1980s (her father landing a job as a mechanical engineer in the tech industry), feels that mini-Musk Marko Elez calling for true-blooded Americans to “Normalize Indian Hate!” makes him a “bad dude” or just another TechBoy prankster?

+ Christopher Harrison: “Thank goodness he didn’t post anything sympathetic to poor people or about getting everyone quality health care. Then JD would be calling for him to be cast out of the country for being a Marxist, if not sent to the wall.”

+ DOGE’s other “kid” hacker, the 19-year-old Edward Coristine, who once called himself Big Balls, was fired at his previous job with a cybersecurity firm for leaking company secrets and not in an Edward Snowden kind of way. Now, the teen has access to the secret data of the US government and many of its employees, citizens, and businesses.

Now is a time for courage, not submission

In the 1940s a generation of Americans defeated fascist powers. This week a simple majority of American voters submitted to a fascist leader who has expressed admiration for Hitler’s generals and aspires to destroy representative government. Rejecting the very reason for the Revolutionary War, his supporters traded a president for a ruler. Some of them didn’t believe the warnings. Others—those whose souls are stained with bigotry, greed, and fear—relished the chance to kneel before a cruel and immoral despot.

Donald Trump, too, is submissive. He is the blushing coward whose unrequited adoration for Vladimir Putin was apparent in Helsinki, the dupe who “fell in love” with Kim Jong Un, and the hype man for Viktor Orbán. He may well, in his weakness, cede influence over the budget to Elon Musk, a government contractor who is a conflict of interest incarnate. Trump’s own conflicts of interest are worse than last time, and his appointees won’t worry about ethics rules being enforced against them.

His supporters will suffer from his incompetence with the rest of us. His management skills haven’t improved since he bungled the pandemic response with deadly results. His plot to round up millions of immigrants will certainly also be deadly, like his smaller prior effort. If Trump musters the nerve to wage his promised trade wars, consumer costs will soar and exports will lag. Anyone who thinks the mix of autocracy, corruption, ineptitude, and chaos will be good for the economy is in for a surprise—anyone who isn’t a billionaire, that is.

Trump’s scheme to politicize the federal workforce, meanwhile, is a potent formula for institutionalizing corruption and incompetence. The justice system will become a weapon of political oppression. Thanks to the fringe-right Supreme Court justices who recently invented presidential immunity, no one knows how many crimes he will commit. Trump’s signature innovation may be unleashing the military on civilians inside our borders.

For all that, now is a time for courage, not submission. The great civil rights leaders had little reason to believe they could change this country, but for several decades their struggle gave hope that all might taste democracy. We must be like them.

Censura de Trump atinge projetos no Brasil; ordem veta clima, gênero e raça

Projetos e pesquisas realizados no Brasil e financiadas por recursos americanos começam a ser alvo do governo Trump. O UOL recebeu documentos que revelam como termos como "direitos humanos", "promoção de justiça social", "gênero", "crise ecológica" e tantos outros passaram a ser barrados de projetos que busquem o financiamento oficial da entidade Fulbright, uma instituição que por décadas vem distribuindo recursos para pesquisadores no Brasil e em todo o mundo.

Procurado, o escritório da Fulbright no Brasil não explicou sua postura e pediu que as perguntas fossem direcionadas para a embaixada dos EUA em Brasília. Na embaixada, porém, nenhuma resposta foi dada e a reportagem foi orientada a procurar o Departamento de Estado norte-americano. Já o Departamento não respondeu às perguntas do UOL sobre a censura.

A censura é parte de uma varredura nas universidades e agências de fomento à pesquisa nos EUA. Para que os projetos possam continuar a existir, os planos de pesquisa e assuntos avaliados precisam passar por uma revisão de palavras e a supressão de conceitos.

O acadêmico Marco Antônio Sousa Alves, da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, é um dos que teve seu projeto censurado. Em entrevista ao UOL, ele contou que havia obtido uma bolsa para trazer um professor americano para sua instituição. Uma data estava sendo definida, em 2025, para que a visita ocorresse.

Mas, nas últimas semanas, a situação mudou radicalmente. Num telefonema, os financiadores explicaram que teriam de fazer "ajustes" em seu projeto.

Mas, quando o novo documento foi enviado na última sexta-feira, ele se deu conta que se tratava de censura. No texto, estavam cortados termos como "direitos humanos e civis", "opressão de gênero e raça" e a constatação do "fortalecimento da extrema direita e a crise de princípios democráticos".
Ficaram ainda barrados conceitos como "o crescimento da população encarcerada e suas implicações racistas", "crescimento das desigualdades", e "crescimento das práticas de vigilância e segurança que violam os direitos civis e políticos fundamentais".

Sousa Alves, segundo-vice-presidente do Sindicato dos Professores da UFMG, indicou que o tema da censura deve entrar na pauta da entidade nos próximos dias para avaliar como será a reação.

Os termos vetados são os mesmos que foram designados na Fundação Nacional de Ciência dos EUA como áreas que devem ser evitadas para que os fundos continuem a ser desembolsados.

Na ofensiva cultural e de valores do governo de Donald Trump, decretos foram assinados ordenando o fim de políticas de diversidade, o estabelecimento do sexo biológico como a única referência oficial e a abolição de projetos de combate ao racismo ou sobre saúde sexual e reprodutiva.

A situação já resultou no banimento de livros nos EUA em instituições de ensino e uma revisão de bibliotecas pelo país.

Desde 1957, mais de 5,2 mil pesquisadores brasileiros foram beneficiados por bolsas de estudo, pagos pela Fulbright. Ao longo dos anos, nomes como o de Joenia Wapichana, atual presidente da Funai, estiveram entre as bolsistas do programa, além de Ellen Gracie, ex-ministra do STF, e Joaquim Barbosa, ex-ministro do STF.

Pelo mundo, as bolsas foram concedidas a 60 vencedores de prêmio Nobel e 39 chefes de estado.

Bateu: “Soundtrack to a coup d'etat” (2024)

“Não é sobre jazz, é jazz” disse um crítico citado no trailer de “Trilha Sonora para um Golpe de Estado” — muito a propósito, porque esse documentário originalíssimo na verdade é sobre o assassinato de Patrice Lumumba (1925 - 1961), o primeiro ministro da República do Congo, mas editado como se fosse um longo improviso dodecafônico sobre apropriação cultural, imperialismo, Dwight Eisenhower, Fidel Castro, Nikita Kruschov e, sim, jazz. Tá entre os indicados ao Oscar mas eu só descobri isso depois de assistir, sou meio atrasildo das ideias quando o assunto é premiação.

Esse bombardeio de imagens sensacionais serve a uma tese mais insinuada do que explicitamente desenvolvida. Segundo o diretor Johan Grimonprez, enquanto a guerra fria era disputada na África, com as primeiras manifestações pela independência das colônias insufladas pela União Soviética e sabotadas pelas potências ocidentais imperialistas, a CIA e o serviço de inteligência de seus países aliados promoviam shows de jazz no continente para servir de disfarce para a presença maciça de espiões e mercenários dispostos a tudo para manter o controle das riquezas africanas mesmo depois da desocupação do território.

Não é sobre a cumplicidade dos músicos, que só descobriram anos depois que serviram de bucha pros arapongas das colônias, mas sobre quanto cinismo é necessário pra sustentar o projeto capitalista — que fica claro nos depoimentos de arrombados como Adlai Stevenson, embaixador dos Estados Unidos na ONU.

Gênios como Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Melba Liston, Ella Fitzgerald (e mesmo o universalmente querido Louis Armstrong) estavam ligados em como os Estados Unidos tratavam a população negra desvalida em suas próprias fronteiras e no estrangeiro — revolucionários do quilate de Malcolm X e Andrée Blouin (a “Pasionaria Negra”) fizeram suas cabeças.

E não tem só jazz: brilham vários artistas da música congolesa (rumba, soukous, mutuashi) como Nico Kasanda (o “Docteur Nico”), Le Grand Kallé e a orquestra Rock-a-Mambo.

“Trilha Sonora para um Golpe de Estado” é uma colagem de imagens de arquivo, entrevistas, frases inseridas em legendas, áudios, em uma contagem regressiva que, presumimos desde o início, vai terminar com o sequestro e morte de Lumumba. É feito para instigar nosso instinto de rebelião, e nada melhor como som ambiente do que alguns dos compassos musicais mais revolucionários já escritos.

+ Trump and Musk’s surreal assertion that the US was spending $50 to $100 million on “condoms for Hamas,” which apparently stemmed from the fact that they didn’t know the difference between the Gaza province of Mozambique and the Gaza Strip, is even more absurd when you realize that the entire Middle East has only received a sliver of funding from USAID for any contraceptive aid (and that peaked during Trump’s previous term), with most of the resources going to Africa, Asia and Latin America…

+ Elon Musk: “USAID was a viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America.”

+ Alex Rubinstein: “Not to make too big a deal of it but the idea that USAID is/was filled with “radical-left Marxists” is kind of insane given that much of their job was to enforce neo-liberal economic shock therapy.”

+ Why was USAID an early target of Musk’s slash-and-burn raid on federal agencies? According to reporting in The Lever: “Musk is trying to shut down USAID as the agency was investigating its oversight of a public-private partnership involving equipment from Musk’s company. Various USAID webpages mentioning Musk’s company are now not accessible on its website.”

+ Trump and Musk seem intent on unplugging all the measures the US government has implemented since the Great Depression to prevent the rise of militant movements of disenfranchised and poor people here and abroad. Be careful what you dismantle, boys.

Can you demolish the world economic order twice? The first time Trump was elected, there were dire prophecies about how his policies would affect global trade. His tariffs would destroy the world economy, we were warned—even by people who had for years warned us about the excesses of globalization. Joseph Stiglitz called the US withdrawal from NAFTA a “nightmare scenario.” The rollout was indeed pretty chaotic. China was the main target, but Canada and the EU ended up in the crosshairs for apparently infringing on America’s capacity to produce enough steel and aluminum to protect its own national security. It got arcane quickly. The EU imposed retaliatory tariffs on Harley Davidson motorcycles and bourbon. It was like a first-year macroeconomics class in reverse: as if England wanted to make its own wine and Portugal wanted to make its own cloth. Wasn’t this irrational? Even worse, wasn’t it inefficient?

Yet the political sense of the trade turn soon became clear—and not just to team Trump. Trade policy would be the most obvious continuity between his administration and Biden’s. Progressive pundits praised Trump’s trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, as his “one good appointee,” and there were whispers that he might make it into the new administration. By 2021 tariffs had been rebranded as the royal road to a just energy transition. In rhetoric, the break with the free trade consensus—however incomplete the bond had been in the first place—seemed total.

What should we expect, now that Trump’s logic of hyperbole has forced him to escalate by talking about tariffs of up to a thousand percent on products from China? We should probably listen to his allies when they say that these are the negotiation tactics of a madman rather than concrete policy proposals. Indeed, trade might be one of the policies on which one administration and the next differ least. Abandoning the pretense of green capitalism will allow Trump to pivot back to the carbon- and extraction-driven development that has always underpinned modern American growth. It will hasten the euthanasia of ESG and accelerate the return to the high times of asset price inflation and share buybacks that characterized both Democratic and Republican administrations since the financial crisis.

Industrial policy will be conducted once again by tax breaks rather than subsidies. Lighthizer will return, perhaps as treasury secretary. The World Trade Organization, born in 1995 and useful only insofar as it delivered on American goals, will continue its senescence and likely early interment before it reaches middle age. Badly needed debt relief for the global south will lose any chance of US support. Trade will be nakedly transactional, with the thin silver lining that a space could be opened for at least rhetorical attention to globalization’s effects on deindustrializing heartlands.

Will any of this lead to greater social justice or reduced inequality? There’s no reason to think so. With the rise of J.D. Vance, National Conservatism’s claim that the GOP is the new party of the working class has been realized at the ballot box—but there’s no sign that it will flatten the country’s ever-steeper hierarchies of wealth. Think tanks of the libertarian and post-neoliberal right will jockey for proximity to the president while the man himself remains focused on the one thing he has always excelled at: going bankrupt and still coming out on top.

Trump: “ Palestinians have no alternative but to leave Gaza.”

+ Holocaust denialism took root and spread in part because the Nazis burned many of the records of their crimes and often spoke obliquely about their genocidal plans. That’s not the case here, where ethnic cleansing is openly and vividly described as if it were a real estate pitch.

Reporter: You are talking tonight about the US taking over a sovereign territory. What authority would allow you to do that? Are you talking about a permanent occupation?

Trump: “I do see a long-term ownership position of Gaza after Palestinians are moved elsewhere. This is not a decision made lightly. Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land.”

+ Trump seems to believe that if he describes the crime he plans to commit before he commits it and no one stops him, it’s no longer a crime. And, I suppose, experience has proved him right.

+ The nice blonde Christian lady who doubles as White House press secretary said on Wednesday that “the US would not pay for the reconstruction of Gaza,” which means this is a typical Trump real estate swindle, where he wants to own something without paying for it.

Se Trump roubar Gaza dos palestinos, melhor ONU virar shopping ou deposito

Juro que tentei permanecer de férias, mas as declarações do presidente Donald Trump ao lado do primeiro-ministro de Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, prometendo uma limpeza étnica em Gaza (sim, a aplicação do termo cai como uma luva) são muito ignóbeis para permanecer em silêncio.

“Nós assumiremos o controle.” Ele propôs, nesta terça (4), expulsar para o Egito e a Jordânia quase dois milhões de palestinos que moram no território destruído pela invasão israelense e criar no local uma “Riviera do Oriente Médio”. Ou seja, defendeu tornar-se sócio de um crime de guerra para implementar o maior empreendimento imobiliário do mundo. Talvez até com condições especiais para a sua empresa, a Trump Organization, erguer imóveis residenciais e comerciais, hotéis, resorts e, claro, campos de golfe.

O que ele fez vai além do campo da bravata para gerar manchetes a fim de encobrir o fato de que não conseguirá melhorar a vida dos trabalhadores dos Estados Unidos no curto prazo ou mesmo para pressionar o Hamas a aceitar termos de rendição ao final do atual acordo de cessar-fogo.

As consequências de suas declarações vão muito além do Oriente Médio. Se uma superpotência pode chegar e avisar que pretende tomar um território que não é seu à revelia do povo que lá habita, como os Estados Unidos vão reclamar quando a China invadir Taiwan? Ou mesmo da invasão da Ucrânia pela Rússia? Claro que as perguntas são retóricas, porque Trump vê os EUA como a única superpotência global com legitimidade para fazer isso.
Se o governo dos Estados Unidos quer ajudar o povo palestino, deveria implementar moradias provisórias no território e financiar a reconstrução rápida de Gaza. É o mínimo da decência, uma vez que foram com suas bombas e o seu respaldo que o governo Netanyahu tentou uma limpeza étnica. Mas o que vemos com Trump é o contrário, com Washington não apenas apoiando, mas avisando que vai tomar as rédeas do genocídio.

Se isso for levado adiante e o mundo não se rebelar, melhor transformar os prédios da ONU em shopping centers.

It will take time to sink in, we tell ourselves, but this time the sinking feels physical, as though gravity had increased twofold. We had imagined the old excitement of sitting around the television to watch the returns trickle in state by state. But by nine o’clock we knew from a surreptitious glance at our phones that our plan was a bad one. There would be no TV, not this time, not for our friends and not for us. We numbly ate our dessert and said our goodbyes amid the inevitable jokes. See you in Ireland. Or Iceland. We hugged each other as though, absurdly, it might be a long time before we saw one another again.

The morning after, we awoke to the serene autumn morning and the usual walk through the fallen leaves with the oblivious dog. A woman was sobbing uncontrollably at the trail head. Impossible under the circumstances not to recall other elections, other mornings after. My German-Jewish father, who died this past January at ninety-eight, liked to quote his own father, a Berlin judge, after the new chancellor was appointed on January 30, 1933. “‘Wait till the next election,’ Vati said, but there never was a next election.”

In the preface to Leaves of Grass (1855), Walt Whitman celebrated the power of the common people to elect their leaders. He wrote of “the terrible significance of their elections—the President’s taking off his hat to them not they to him—these too are unrhymed poetry.” By “terrible” Whitman meant something like awe-inspiring, sublime, worthy of poetry, like the “terrible beauty” that W. B. Yeats invoked in “Easter, 1916.” The word carries a different meaning today. The two presidential elections that preceded the publication of Leaves of Grass were also terrible, despite Whitman’s comparison. Both candidates supported slavery and the expansionist Mexican War in 1848. Four years later, the Southern sympathizer Franklin Pierce, Hawthorne’s good friend, was installed in the White House, with the Civil War on the horizon. At certain points in our history mere political campaigns and get-out-the-vote efforts can seem inadequate to the task at hand. “Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis,” Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote of the 1838 policy of Indian Removal, that mass deportation known as the Trail of Tears. But sometimes, and this is surely one of those times, imagination is as necessary as resistance. A different way forward will have to be at least as energizing, as intoxicating, as full of unrhymed poetry as the lurid Halloween campaign that just won the day. And more than voting will be needed. “Cast your whole vote,” Thoreau urged his readers in On Civil Disobedience. “Not a strip of paper merely, but your whole influence.”

Our kids attended a school where time out was exacted on the Thinking Chair, the progressive alternative to the Dunce Cap. Our younger son thought it was the Sinking Chair. It will take time to sink in, and we’re still sinking.

O último mês não foi bom pra quem cultiva o mito do excepcionalismo americano, a tese de que os Estados Unidos foram colonizados por um povo moralmente superior e que carrega a missão de moldar o mundo de acordo com os seus princípios — um jeito de pensar que a humanidade entendeu como absurdo e perigoso quando vingou na Alemanha nazista. Bom, pelo menos foi assim em 1939.

Agora estamos vendo o desmonte do Estado por um ex-apresentador de reality show que conseguiu falir um cassino e uma cadeira gamer humana que faz carros que explodem. Todas as últimas notícias daquele país — o sequestro do Tesouro por uma gangue de moleques do reddit, a criação de uma divisão do governo baseada em um meme, o departamento da educação à mercê da ação do traficante de quetamina do Elon Musk — parecem sinopses de episódios da série Veep descartadas porque até a paródia carece de alguma verossimilhança.

Meu alívio cômico favorito pra tudo isso é ler as análises dos comentaristas que em novembro atenuaram a segunda vitória do Trump com o argumento de que os Estados Unidos têm salvaguardas e um sistema de pesos e contrapesos para evitar que o que está acontecendo efetivamente acontecesse. Como todo mundo que já leu aquela ata de reunião de condomínio que eles chama de Constituição, eu desconfiava que não seria bem assim — contratos costumam ser bem grandinhos por uma boa razão.

Agora a imprensa gringa tá correndo atrás do prejuízo, tentando se livrar da culpa por ter apoiado ou não ter enxergado a letalidade potencial da administração Trump 2 fingindo demência ou empurrando a responsabilidade pra esquerda — sim, segundo esse artigo do segundo link a mídia que ignorou a denúncia do fascismo chegou à conclusão que a denúncia do fascismo é que causa o fascismo.

Não que a esquerda esteja reivindicando o dom da profecia por ter disparado o alarme — quando você está lutando pela sobrevivência no meio do rebosteio o prazer de jogar na cara do outro um “eu te disse” reduz substancialmente. Confesso que estou achando engraçado ver bolsonaristas sendo devolvidos pro Brasil em estado de choque porque achavam que o discurso de campanha chamando latino de sub-raça não era com eles, mas tô ligado que os caras são apenas as primeiras vítimas de um governo catastrófico que deve afetar todo mundo.

Mas é isso: quem diria que normalizar a participação de gente como Trump e Musk na política ia acabar em saudação nazista e papo de invadir o Canadá? Todo mundo, a não ser a galera que foi ensinada desde cedo que um povo educado na base de puritanismo cristão e alimentado quase que exclusivamente de derivados do milho seria superior a alguém.
