Os filmes que mais me impactaram em 2023

   Bem, como em todo início de ano - desde 1968 - recapitulo o ano passado através das memorias dos filmes que vivenciei. Aqui está uma lista de alguns que me impactaram muito - e que recomendo vivamente.

Em 2023 assisti a 214 filmes (abaixo de minha média, que geralmente passa de 300, pois acompanhei tambem muitos  seriados).

And what about food? Usually, people eat more to maintain the warmth of their body. But the opposite is happening. One friend of mine, who is average weight, told me that he lost over 8kg so far. There is very little food available yet they exert a lot of effort trying to secure basics. He tells me: “You know what we did to reduce our suffering? The whole family decided to start fasting. This obligates all of us to not ask or wonder about food all day long. When the sun goes down, we have our only meal depending on what is available.

Many families have no access to flour, so they cannot even have bread. A friend, in another area, tells me: “We haven’t had a piece of bread in four days. We have children, which worsens our misery. We have some food left, but it is not enough. Adult men are crying in the streets begging to buy, not get, flour.”

Ahmad’s younger brother comes into the room to say good morning. We discuss how sad we are to have such cold weather. He also discusses another luxury we no longer have: hot drinks whenever we wanted.

Nowadays, with the lack of cooking gas, drinking something hot is a long process that starts with creating heat by burning wood or nylon, cartons and plastic. Also, you always need to check whether it is a priority or not to drink now to maintain the resources.

He shares with us the memory of the last cappuccino he had: “It was hot and delicious. I really enjoyed it and could feel its taste in my mouth till now. What irritates me the most is that I remember not completing my cup because I was in a hurry. I drank half of it and then left not knowing it would be my last time to drink cappuccino. Now, two months later, I would drink it till the last drop.”

The economic misery in the US is deep, pervasive and real, no matter what the people who play with numbers for a living want to make you believe. The more Biden tries to tell people their pain isn’t real, the deeper he’s going to plummet in the polls.

 

+ Another factor in declining life expectancy in the US: unaffordable rents and evictions. According to a Princeton study published in Social Science and Medicine, someone paying 50% of their income on rent was 9% more likely to die in the next 20 years than someone paying 30% of their income on rent. This is especially true for black renters, over a third of whom now pay more than half their income on rent.

 

+ In 2022. at least 315 people died while experiencing homelessness in the Portland metro area. The mortality risk for people experiencing homelessness was nearly 6 times higher than the general population.

 

+ Researchers gave homeless people $750 per month for a year, no questions asked. The recipients spent the money on food, housing, transportation, clothing, and health care. And after six months, only 12% of those who received funds were still homeless.

Seguimos rituais e tradições que, muitas vezes, não temos ideia de como se espalharam. Por exemplo, o hábito de usar roupas brancas no Ano Novo ganhou tração no Brasil por causa de membros do candomblé que faziam suas oferendas a Iemanjá. Já pular as sete ondas tem relação com a própria e as sete linhas da umbanda, com cada pulo representando um orixá diferente. “Ah, mas para mim, eles têm significado diferente!” Tudo bem, não precisa se assustar com isso. Não é a única explicação para o branco, também temos a espiritualidade, a paz mundial, a promoção na loja de camisetas, apesar de a influência da religião de matriz africana ter sido determinante para massificar o uso. Além disso, o mais importante é entender que a reorganização e ressignificação de elementos simbólicos por grupos sociais faz parte da dinâmica humana. Por exemplo, Jesus de Nazaré não nasceu quando hoje celebramos o Natal - esse dia foi escolhido por autoridades da igreja. O 25 de dezembro era a data de celebração do Nativitas Solis Invicti ou o nascimento do Sol Invicto, uma divindade pagã cultuada no Império Romano. Quem reclama no sincretismo brasileiro entre religiões de matriz africana e o cristianismo deveria lembrar que o sincretismo foi fundamental no estabelecimento das bases do cristianismo. Afinal, nada como pegar uma festa existente para entregá-la àquele que estava sendo apresentado aos pagãos como o filho de Deus. O que deveria nos assustar é a violência contra religiões de matriz africana, como os sistemáticos ataques a terreiros e membros do candomblé e da umbanda, acusados por lideranças evangélicas de estarem cultuando forças demoníacas. E, com isso, Exu se tornou um dos maiores alvos de campanhas de fake news da história. Você não precisa compartilhar da cosmovisão do candomblé e da umbanda. Dê o significado que você quiser à sua festa. Mas antes de xingar, caluniar, atacar ou agredir quem professa essas crenças ao longo de 2024, lembre-se que você estava de branco e pulando ondinhas. Somos muitos mais conectados àqueles que não entendemos completamente do que imaginamos.

 I have never been a fan of the sun nor the sunny weather. I am a lover of the rain, winter and tree leaves falling. I remember at high school – my English language teacher would always ask me and other students during the recess to stand in the sun. “Hug the sun, feel its warmth. It is full of vitamin D.” I did what she asked but never liked it.

On the other hand, this teacher opened the door for me to learn about literature, which I loved. In class, we would read summarised classics like Great Expectations, Pride and Prejudice and A Tale of Two Cities.

My friend shares with me the results of the Booker prize; it seems that Prophet Song won this year. Based on brief descriptions of the shortlisted books, I see myself more interested in reading The Bee Sting.

I just wish to go back to spending a whole day in my bed, while it is raining outside, and enjoy reading one book after another. One fear I had was dying before reading enough of all the beautiful and great books in this world. Now, I am terrified of dying before even living my life.

But during these times, I could not pray enough for the weather to be sunny. First, for those who are living in schools and tents not to suffer, and to be able to charge our batteries and phones using the solar power of our neighbours. Unfortunately, since yesterday, it has been raining heavily. We had hail.

In no time, most of the streets around us were covered by water due to the poor infrastructure. Most people are still wearing flip-flops shoes are a luxury they cannot afford. I have noticed many people wearing torn flip-flops. How can they move in the streets?

 These days, I am afraid of checking my phone. Checking SMS messages is the toughest: either someone is dead, someone’s house is destroyed, someone is in dire need for something essential, or someone is missing.

I remember a day, before, when I had an important interview. I decided to wear a tie to look formal but I don’t know how to tie one. So I went to a friend’s workplace to ask him for help. He showed complete support. But he, too, did not know how to do it.

We opened a YouTube video and he started following the instructions. People in the surrounding offices and visitors looked at us weirdly. After many failed attempts, and with the time of the interview approaching, he looked at me, gave me a big smile and said: “Who said you need to wear a tie to impress a bunch of senior management people? You are charismatic and you have all what it takes. No need for the tie.”

We laughed and I left his office, holding the tie in my hand. Then he called after me, I turned around and he said: “But I promise to learn how to do it before you get married. You need to look good in the pictures.”

When I received the message that my friend got killed, along with other family members, I turned off my phone. I don’t know why, I just thought this will make it as if it did not happen at all. I continued doing what I was doing. Then, I turned the mobile on, opened the message, read it and sat silently, trying to absorb the news.

He was a father of adorable children. He was loved by everyone around him. He was helpful, optimistic, inspirational and full of life. Now, he is no longer with us.

How many people will die before this is over?

 My exhausted brain refuses to stop thinking about all the bad scenarios that I, my loved ones, and all Gazans face if this nightmare does not end soon. I got brief and temporary access to the internet, and I unintentionally saw videos and photos of horrible things Gazans are going through. They made me realise that death could be a merciful fate. Awake and terrified, I knew it was going to be another long night.

The people in the next house seem to have had a long night too. Their child did not stop crying for one minute. Yesterday, I was on a call with my friend. His wife, a doctor, gave birth to their third child, whom he described as “healthy, beautiful yet a very loud crier”. He tells me that now begins a new journey of finding everything a baby needs. “In our house, the one we evacuated from, we had many items of the older children,” he told me. “Also, my wife started preparing the needs for the new one. We had to leave everything behind.”

There was an additional problem he tells me. “Can you imagine that right now I have no legal proof that my son is actually my son?” he says. “My wife gave birth and the doctor gave us a signed paper that she did so, but there is nothing else to prove that this boy is ours. What if we get the chance to leave Gaza to save our lives? They won’t let us take the boy.”

On a different note, he tells me that he filled his gas canister, which usually costs $17 to fill, for $157. To be honest, he sounded happier about the canister than the arrival of his baby. He was lucky because he was able to find a place to fill the canister and had money to do so. Our hosting family have been tirelessly working on filling a gas canister but in vain.

 

O alvo da educação: rentabilidade e punição

gada com o individualismo, com o culto

endeusamento do dinheiro.

 
Nesse contexto, não é possível se sur-
preender com o fato de estudantes do
ensino médio paulista terem anuncia-
do em suas aulas de projeto de vida o
desejo de se tornarem agiotas.

Precisamos honrar o nome de Jéssica Vitória Canedo

 A morte da jovem Jéssica Vitória Canedo foi uma tragédia. Uma tragédia individual, familiar e também coletiva, porque demonstra o fracasso do mundo que construímos para nós mesmos.

Sim, porque quando uma jovem de apenas 22 anos, que convivia com suas dores e dificuldades, em vez de ser respeitada ou ajudada, vê-se envolvida em mentiras absurdas e exposta a ataques de ódio tão intensos que lhe roubam a vida, fica provado que falhamos miseravelmente como sociedade e como humanidade.

Diante da revolta que todos nós sentimos por ver que a invenção e disseminação de fake news fizeram uma vítima fatal, nossa primeira reação foi procurar os culpados. Quem criou os prints falsos de conversas entre Whindersson Nunes e Jéssica Vitória, que nem se conheciam? E por que divulgaram essa montagem criminosa? E como essa pessoa que criou esses prints forjados escolheu o nome de Jéssica? Ele a conhece da internet? Na vida real? Ou foi totalmente aleatório? Ainda não sabemos. Jéssica também não sabia.

As fake news se tornaram a pior chaga da nossa comunicação, da nossa vida. Elas derrubam governos, elegem tiranos, corrompem a democracia, destroem reputações, semeiam discórdia, abalam relações. E matam. Uma fake news matou Jéssica.

Mas foi há alguns anos que as notícias falsas intencionalmente produzidas, os boatos industrializados, receberam esse nome pomposo de fake news. A mentira e a falta de caráter sempre existiram e, na internet, encontraram solo fértil em muitos lugares, especialmente no Brasil.

Um verbete da Wikipedia sobre notícias falsas nos diz que, segundo uma pesquisa de 2018 do Instituto Ipsos, "o brasileiro é o povo que mais acredita em fake news dos 27 países que fizeram parte da pesquisa". E não apenas acredita, como também produz e difunde fake news aos milhões. Todos os dias. O tempo todo.

Claro que a polícia precisa investigar para descobrir quem foram os criadores dessa mentira que matou Jéssica. E que todos os que disseminaram esses boatos também precisam ser responsabilizados. Mas e a nossa parte em tudo isso?

Na medida em que seguimos esses perfis que divulgam mentiras, sempre com tom sensacionalista, sem ética, sem nada, não somos coniventes também? Não somos nós os milhões que catapultaram essas pessoas para a fama? Não somos nós, os seguidores, que legitimamos o sucesso desses irresponsáveis que, em nome do "furo", da "nota em primeira mão", publicam sem checar a veracidade do que divulgam, uma vez que não têm nenhum compromisso com a verdade, apenas com o marketing e o lucro?

E as pessoas que atacaram Jéssica? Elas também não são parte do problema? Não são responsáveis por esse crime? Se sentimos a dor do fim da vida de uma jovem inocente, que pediu para que as fake news parassem, se nos solidarizamos com a dor de uma mãe que pediu para que a filha não fosse atacada porque tinha depressão, não seria o caso de honrarmos sua memória agora que ela se foi?

Eu acho que sim. Eu acho que o mínimo que podemos fazer é parar de seguir pessoas desqualificadas, sensacionalistas, irresponsáveis, que tratam fake news como notícia, que não se importam em difamar, que lucram duas vezes mentindo e desmentindo.

É hora de honrar o nome de Jéssica Vitória. É hora de agirmos com a lisura que cobramos dos outros. Porque o que aconteceu com Jéssica poderia ter acontecido com você. Ou comigo, ou com qualquer outra pessoa. Ninguém está blindado contra a maldade. Mas o monstro que cresce é aquele que a gente alimenta. Temos que parar de alimentar o monstro das fake news. Porque ele é forte, poderoso, voraz e, como agora sabemos, ele mata.

+ The defining characteristic of Biden’s political career has been to make compromises with the right, no matter how far right the right gets. What started with amicable lunches with Strom Thurmond has ended with him knee-deep in a genocidal war with Netanyahu. It’s no surprise that Biden ended up here. It’s where he’s always been headed. It’s mildly surprising that the rest of the party has so willingly gone along for the ride, on a doomed political trajectory fueled by burning the aspirations of their own base.

+ Indeed, for most of his political career, Biden has been so desperate to compromise with the right that he’s rarely cared whether the person he’s compromising with even compromises anything back.

+ Day after day, Biden keeps committing political suicide and no one in his party seems to care. He combines the arrogance of RBG with the political tone-deafness of HRC, all wrapped up in the demyelinating brain of a man who lacks the political skills to slow his freefall. Biden’s job rating has fallen to an all-time low since taking office at a mere 34%.

+ Biden’s approval numbers began their downward slide about the time he retreated from the social welfare spending during the pandemic.

+ It’s not the first time Biden’s cut welfare, either. He helped ram Clinton’s dismantling of welfare through the Senate in 1996, one of 26 Democratic senators to vote for it. He meant it. Biden: “Government subsidy is not the ultimate answer to the problems of the poor…We are all too familiar with the stories of welfare mothers driving luxury cars and leading lifestyles that mirror the rich and famous. Whether they are exaggerated or not, these stories underlie a broad social concern that the welfare system has broken down.”

+ Bill Clinton, Al Gore, HRC, Barack Obama & Biden all share the same New Democrat philosophy: hawkish on defense, pro-business & banks, punitive criminal justice policies and a desire to roll back Great Society social programs. Clinton and Obama had the rhetorical skills to sell symbolism to the base, to make people see what isn’t there. The others don’t and they paid the political price.

 It is Christmas today. In another country, far away from ours, there is a family celebrating. Their house is full of light, they are smiling, hugging each other out of love, sharing gifts and hoping for the best future.

Here, there is no Christmas. Instead, there are families living in complete darkness, sad, hugging each other out of fear, sharing prayers, and hoping they will get out of this nightmare alive.
