A ‘magic pill’ made Israeli violence invisible. We need to stop swallowing it

"The world has never listened to Palestinian voices or taken seriously the existential threat Israel poses to Palestinian life, and this has not materially changed despite the increase in performative angst. To the contrary, Palestinians have for three-quarters of a century endured the world telling us that Israeli “security concerns” – however defined by Israel – are more important than our rights and lives. As a result Palestinians live with two omnipresent forms of violence: Israeli violence directly inflicted upon our bodies, land and society, and western violence, where only our erasure prompts the world to notice us and see our humanity – but only barely.

I reach this conclusion from observing up close, for a quarter-century, how this mode of western thinking and operating plays out. Despite two years of carnage in Gaza, and everything the world has learned about Israel’s true intentions, that mode is repeating itself as I write this, with global powers lining up behind a proposal that does little to ensure Palestinians gain any say over their future.

Rhetoric without consequence has been the west’s modus operandi for decades. The cost has been catastrophic."

    Dame Jane Goodall obituary |

"Goodall, who has died aged 91, was not the first person to see wild chimpanzees use objects as tools, but she was certainly the first to observe the behaviour so closely and repeatedly, and to document it thoroughly. That chimpanzees ate meat and used tools were stunning discoveries, and with them Goodall earned her first few paragraphs in the history of primatology.

The project was supposed to end within six months, but Goodall’s discoveries led to renewed support and more research. At a time when animals were usually conceptualised as mindless bundles of reflex and instinct, she came to describe the ones she was studying as deliberative creatures who remembered the past, anticipated the future, planned, had emotional lives and were driven by individual personality and character."

trump’s Gaza plan: the bloodshed must end, but this proposal betrays Palestinians

"The plan pays lip service to eventual self-determination and statehood as a mere “aspiration” – not a right – of the Palestinian people, via a path that could not be more vague, conditional or tentative. It states that Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza. Mr Netanyahu has already said that the military would stay in most of it and would “forcibly resist” a Palestinian state.

Mr Trump has strong-armed the Israeli prime minister at last, but deadly strikes continue and he, like Joe Biden before him, could have halted the slaughter long ago. Telling the two parties to “move fast” now reflects his short attention span as much as the pressing need for peace. He will surely settle for whatever allows him to claim credit. If Israel does stop, it could resume the offensive at any time – just as it broke the ceasefire early this year."

      JEFFREY ST. CLAIR>

+ The fatal flaw in Donald Trump’s scheme to whitewash American history of its most depraved and embarrassing episodes is that his administration is committing new acts of barbarity and stupidity in real-time on an almost hourly basis. Consider the last week in Chicago and Portland.

+ The initial story from ICE was that 30-year-old Marimar Martinez was part of a “convoy” of cars in the Brighton Park neighborhood of southwest Chicago, which was trailing ICE vehicles for half an hour, ramming them with their cars and trying to force them off the road.

At one point, a DHS official later claimed, Martinez aimed an automatic weapon at the ICE agents, who, fearing for their lives, responded by shooting Martinez repeatedly.

But once again, the government’s story unraveled once the body cam footage was released. Videos from ICE cameras, as well as Martinez’s own Facebook livestream, show Martinez following the ICE vehicles, while frequently honking her horn.

Contrary to the allegations made by DHS, at no point does the video show Martinez, a US citizen with no criminal record, turn her car toward the ICE vehicles. Instead, the footage captures the ICE agent swerving his white Chevy Tahoe into Martinez’s Nissan SUV, forcing her to a stop.

There’s no evidence that Martinez pointed a weapon at the ICE agent. Rather, the ICE agent can be heard on the recording almost begging Martinez to give him a reason to shoot her: “Do something, bitch!” he says as he exits his car and seconds later unloads a volley of shots at Martinez, hitting her seven times.

This is the latest episode of ultra-violence in Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz, where ICE agents have killed and brutalized Chicago residents for reasons that later turned out to be bogus.

Three weeks ago, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez was shot by an ICE agent after dropping his daughter off at pre-school in Franklin Park, a suburb west of Chicago. ICE originally said that Villegas-Gonzalez was shot after he tried to run over an ICE agent, who DHS claimed had been severely wounded. But the video of the incident recorded the voice of the officer grazed by Villegas-Gonzalez’s car saying his injury was “nothing major.” Another video showed that Villegas-Gonzalez was driving away from the ICE officers, not toward them. DHS tried to smear Villegas-Gonzalez as a dangerous criminal with a “history of reckless driving.” But a new report by NBC News Chicago shows that he had never been convicted or even charged with a crime.

Marimar Martinez works at a local school. She has no criminal record and is highly regarded by her colleagues, employers and neighbors. After being shot, she managed to drive her SUV to a nearby oil service station. She parked the Nissan, now perforated with bullet holes, in the lot and staggered into the office, where the manager of the shop tried to stanch the flow of blood with those ubiquitous blue towels common at gas stations.

On a recording of his call to 911, the manager can be heard saying, “Send somebody quick because this lady is bleeding profusely. I mean, it was instant puddles.”

When the paramedics arrived and began to treat her wounds, a bullet fell out of her arm and onto the floor of the office.

The FBI and ICE trailed the ambulance to the hospital, where Martinez was arrested before she’d even been fully treated by ER doctors. A few days later, Martinez was charged with felony assault on a federal law enforcement official.

But at her arraignment, Federal Judge Heather McShain denied the government’s demand that Martinez be held without bail, ruling that her lack of criminal history and ties to the community persuaded her to release Martinez pending trial, a pretty stern rebuke to the government’s inflated theory of the case.

+ ICE agents handcuffed and detained Chicago Alderperson Jessie Fuentes inside a hospital emergency room this week, after she had demanded they share a warrant for a man they detained inside the hospital, who was reportedly injured during a chase. She was later released. Fuentes: “I went over to the hospital and I simply asked the ICE agents if they had a signed judicial warrant for the individual that they were trying to detain inside of the emergency room. No one was harassing the ICE agents. In fact, the only person harassed in that situation was me. I was handcuffed and shoved twice up against the wall for simply exercising my right to advocate for my constituents.”

+ David J. Bier: ”You can’t enjoy a cup of coffee in Chicago without armed federal agents storming out and tackling you. This used to be a free country. We will become one again. Don’t give up hope, and don’t let them trick you into thinking this is normal.”

    Mourn, or Else

In a field, a large sphere painted with the U.S. flag, a bald eagle with its head bowed and the words “Pray for America.”

"The past two weeks showed us what that future looks like. The administration and its deep-pocketed allies sent up a trial balloon: Mourn, or else.

What we have seen in the wake of Kirk’s assassination is an old Red Scare playbook, when corporate antagonism to New Deal reforms dovetailed with political witch hunts. Once again, state forces are colluding with corporations to erase ideas they do not like by harassing people who represent ideas that they don’t want to exist. This time, the witch hunt for bad people with bad ideas is guided by an unhinged theory of unitary executive power, a rapaciously illegitimate Supreme Court and corporate interests that control both the medium and the message. If you have not experienced the kind of supercharged harassment this environment breeds, count yourself lucky. But don’t count yourself safe. Academics, professors, teachers, librarians and other civil servants have been living under the censorious threat of defamation, stalking and politically motivated violence since Red Scare techniques went digital. Trump is promising to do the same to anyone else he considers an enemy."

    Trump, o troll

A side profile of an elderly man with distinctive blonde hair blowing in the wind, wearing a dark suit and white shirt, standing outdoors against a blurred urban background.

    RUDÁ RICCI

Bom dia.

Bannon convence a Goldman Sachs a investir na Internet Gaming EntertainmentI (GE), que explora a popularidade do videogame World of Warcraft

Criam o movimento "gamergate". Steve Bannon percebe a oportunidade

Portanto, cautela neste momento.

A portrait of a woman on a couch.

Ivana Lowell talks about spinning her high-drama family tales into “House of Guinness” with the “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight.

"“House of Guinness” is not Ms. Lowell’s first foray into her family’s back pages. In the 2010 memoir “Why Not Say What Happened?” she recounted, in admirably measured prose, the harrowing story of her upbringing in a rundown English manor by parents and guardians of whom the most charitable thing that could be said was that they were epically negligent.

When Ms. Lowell was 6, she was sexually abused by the husband of her nanny, she writes. An accident with a kettle caused third-degree burns over much of her body, leaving her with lifelong scars. The man she believed to be her father — Caroline Blackwood’s second husband, the pianist Israel Citkowitz — would prove to be no relation. She learned that her biological father was the screenwriter Ivan Moffatt, one of her mother’s lovers. Her sister Natalya died of a heroin overdose at 18.

“I have no idea how I survived it all,” Ms. Lowell said. “I think because I didn’t know any better or any worse. I was burned and raped and abused, and that’s just how it was. If you don’t know any different, you think this is normal. The Guinness sense of humor helped.”"

The Old Climate-Activism Playbook No Longer Works. What Else Can?

An illustration of a human figure, clenched fist raised to the sun, as a line of tiny silhouetted protesters climbs atop its body.

"With Sun Day, McKibben hopes to recapture the spirit of the first Earth Day, in 1970, th e earliest wide-scale mobilization of the environmental movement, which helped catapult issues like pollution and conservation onto the national agenda. Like Earth Day, McKibben told me, Sun Day is meant to be “a giant potluck supper” for activists around the country: “We’ve set the date and the theme, and everyone’s bringing their own dish to the floor.”

In some ways, focusing on renewable energy right now is a logical bet. In March, the United States hit a new milestone when fossil fuels generated less than half the nation’s electricity. In June, solar was the largest source of electricity for the European Union for the first time ever. Last year, over 90 percent of new power globally came from clean-energy sources. The United Nations announced in July that solar power is now on average 41 percent cheaper than fossil fuels. “For the very first time in this saga, the force of economic gravity is working in the right direction,” McKibben said. His hope is that engaging people in small ways, where they live, could hasten the clean-energy transition that is already underway in the U.S.

But Sun Day also feels like a tactical swerve for McKibben. Climate activism over the past decade has been defined by global protests against fossil fuels, by Greta Thunberg’s student strikes, by the emergence of the Sunrise Movement. McKibben has been among the strongest exponents of that era’s climate-activism strategy — confrontational, morally stark, bent on shutting down economic activity that endangered humanity in the long term even if it meant reducing corporate profits and curtailing Americans’ lifestyle options in the short term.

Now McKibben is taking a different tack, one that seems to share a message with a more moderate, adaptationist wing of the climate world while also harking back to the innocence and idealism of Earth Day. “This is clearly the thing that we can work on at the moment that stands a chance of making a difference,” he told me. His own shift in strategy comes as many activists are asking themselves some difficult questions: What has climate activism really given us? And where should it go from here?"
