In "I'm Still Here," a remarkably stoic Fernanda Torres keeps the memory alive

"Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here,”is not the typical home invasion movie. There are no violent assaults, stolen goods or damaged property. The film doesn’t feature any of the tropes that we’ve desensitized ourselves to. It is simply a tale of how easily our repose can be inverted into repulsion. And that’s what makes it all the more terrifying.

As Eunice, Torres subverts the image of a doting homemaker suffering in the absence of her breadwinning patriarch. She doesn’t agonize or tolerate her predicament, she endures. Torres’ fortitude brims from the screen like sweet maternal comfort. Among all of the women in contention for an Oscar this year, Torres’ work stands out as the warmest; a wonderfully complex performance that spotlights the work mothers do, and how often and innately they must bear the weight of the world in silence to keep it from burdening their families."
