'Frankenstein' Review: Guillermo del Toro's Melodramatic Adaption Is Perfect for the Big Screen — and Families

frankenstein. oscar isaac as victor frankenstein in frankenstein. cr. ken woroner/netflix © 2025.

More than anything, del Toro’s Frankenstein is about parents and children. Fathers and sons, in particular

See Frankenstein on the big screen for its outlandish gothic settings, fanciful supernatural storyline, and performances that play not just for the back row, but for the heavens themself (or whatever lies below.) It is lovely, it is lurid, it is extravagant. But the spectacle is an ornate mask, and below it is a tale of intimacy, and delicacy. There is an everyday story here, strange as it may be to say.

It’s a daughter story. It’s a son story. It’s a cautionary tale, not about science run amok but about the perils of not picking up your kid’s car at the mechanic shop (so to speak)."
